The Meaning of the Lotus Since ancient times in the Near and Far East, the lotus flower has been a symbol of personal and spiritual transformation. Unlike most flowers, the lotus begins as a small seed at the bottom of a muddy pond. Slowly it sprouts and rises up towards the light until it breaks through the water's surface as a young bud. In the warmth of the bright sun, it begins to open its petals and blossom. What is unique about this, is that while the murky pool provides the minerals and water needed for the lotus to grow, the lotus itself must seek out the sunlight vital to its survival and growth. It is this reaching for the light, this courageous reaching for what it needs to live and thrive and to fulfill its destiny that has -- over centuries -- inspired individuals to do the same.
